A ballast, or transformer, is required to maintain operating voltage and provide start-up voltage for certain lamp types. Recently, ballast manufacturers have been focusing on more efficient electronic ballasts and governments at all levels have begun to introduce legislation to end the sale and use of older generation, inefficient magnetic ballasts.
