Cowichan Theatre

The Island Savings Centre in Duncan offers diverse spaces for all sorts of pursuits - a library, ice rink, dance studio, multi-purpose hall and meeting rooms, plus the 731-seat Cowichan Theatre. With the many types of venues and activities, specialized lighting for each task is critical.

But one corner of the Centre was overlooked until recently.

“The lobby of our theatre doubles up as an art gallery, as a showcase for local artists,” says Mike Schaefer, the theatre’s Technical Director. “For the longest time the lighting we had in there was halogen track lighting. But we were finding that it didn’t do the artwork justice. The lights tend to be a little yellow; it made the artwork seem dingy.”

Noticing that a crew from Albrite Lighting was on site working elsewhere in the Centre, Schaefer decided to find out whether something could be done for his theatre lobby.
