Our History

Albrite Lighting first opened its doors in Victoria in 1970. Partners Jack and Mark Zabel & Don Graham were one of the first Western Canadian suppliers of, the then new, long-life incandescent light bulbs. Quickly realizing that there was demand for a full line lamp wholesaler in the commercial and property management industries in Victoria, Albrite added fluorescent lamps and ballasts to their product mix.

Soon after, Albrite opened its first branch on the Mainland, in North Vancouver. As the only true lamp wholesaler in the area, growth was swift and Albrite moved to larger premises in Burnaby. During this time, Albrite also briefly operated a location in Seattle. As the business grew, so too did the product line and, Albrite added fluorescent fixtures to their product offering in the late 1970s.

In 1980 Don Graham sold his shares in Albrite to the Zabel brothers. Soon after, Albrite bought Canadian Securex, a janitorial and lighting supply company. In the early 1980s Albrite also began supplying HID fixtures and experienced growth across many sectors including industrial and property management as well as sales to electrical contractors.

During the early 1990s, Jack and Mark Zabel made the decision to retire and sell their interests in the company to their respective children. The infusion of new blood and youthful energy had a profound impact on the company and sales growth was significant. In 1993 Albrite Vancouver once again outgrew its premises and moved to its current location in Port Coquitlam.

In 2001 Albrite opened a branch in Grande Prairie, Alberta to capitalize on the lucrative oil industry. Sales growth was steady and the operation was quite a success, however the branch was closed in 2007 to focus on continued success in our key markets.

In July of 2009, Wayne Zabel bought out his final partner and for the first time in its 40 year history, Albrite Lighting has a single shareholder. Albrite Lighting has recently embarked on a large scale corporate rejuvenation project aimed at poising company for continued growth and a strong future. Next time you are at your local Albrite branch you will notice all sorts of changes, such as: a new logo, a new website, improved business operating systems and inventory control and a more consistent brand image. We are working hard to continue to build upon the success of our brand and keep satisfied customers coming back time and again.

We are proud of our history and the accomplishments of our founders and those who built the company and we look forward to continuing the proud tradition of our family run company.
